Structural Strain in the Course of Social Transformation Li Hanlin Wei Qingong Zhang Yan?121? The structural adjustment and innovation occasioned by institutional change give rise to conflicts and contradictions among different interest groups. The problems that arise from these conflicts can be attributed to the tensions of “structural strain.” Anomie is a classic structural problem. On the basis of survey data, we analyze and test the relationship between structural strain and anomie and find that structural differences and divisions in social status, organizational structure, role structure, power status and income and educational level have indeed contributed to the rise of anomie. Such negative phenomena as individual anomie, degree of dissatisfaction, relative deprivation and status inconsistency derive, to a very large extent, from the imbalances and tensions that arise from the fact that objective structural divisions have outpaced institutional integration.
